ANTIBIOTICS
FOR EVERYONE!?
By Rebecca Karchere
In
my practice, I find it somewhat amusing the way my patients
react to illness. Please do not take this personally but I
feel that I must confess it and explain why I find some humor
in it. Well over 50% of my patients will confess that when
they get an infection, they go directly to their medical
doctor. Most of the time, if not all, they receive an
antibiotic. You are probably thinking, well that sounds pretty
normal. Well, normal is a relative term and just because
something is 'normal' doesn't mean that it is the best
way.
Antibiotics only kill bacteria, so if you have
another pathogen like fungus, yeast or a virus in your body,
you are not getting the proper care if handed an antibiotic.
On top of that, medicine does not address the reason or cause
for the infection. Why is it that people run to the doctor for
many different reasons and all come out leaving with an
antibiotic prescription? When did antibiotics become the cure
for everything? Are all our problems caused by bacteria? No.
Are we all antibiotic deficient when we get sick? No
The reality of antibiotics is this: Simply put,
antibiotics are poisons that are used to kill bacteria and
only licensed physicians can prescribe them. Certainly, many
people have benefited from using them and sometimes they are
necessary for short periods of time only. The situation I am
referring to is the overuse of antibiotics, which I come
across constantly both in my practice and personally. As an
adult, you have three to four pounds of beneficial bacteria
and yeast living within your intestines.
These microbes
compete for nutrients from the food you eat. Usually,
beneficial bacteria keep the ever-present yeasts in check.
However, every time you swallow antibiotics, you kill the
beneficial bacteria within your intestines called probiotics.
When you do so, you upset the delicate balance of your
intestinal terrain. The party that yeast has in your body
after taking an antibiotic is called dysbiosis. After enough
beneficial bacteria die, another infection develops typically
about 3 weeks later in the urinary tract, vaginal tract or
sinuses. Other conditions such as parasitic infections, leaky
gut, irritable bowel, and food allergies can develop as well.
What you may not have known is that the beneficial bacteria in
the gut is part of your immune system. The antibiotic kills
the immune system hence the secondary infection. Does this
sound logical? In addition, non- foods that people put in
their mouth also weaken the immune system. These foods include
white sugar, white flour, caffeine, pasteurized dairy and
alcohol.
The human body is physically made out of
water, macronutrients and micronutrients. In addition humans
have a soul (mind, will and emotions) and a spirit. In summary
you are all three and they need to be in balance in order to
live life to the fullest. When the body is sick, it is out of
balance. You only need one area out of balance and the 'whole'
is disturbed.
The solution is to restore balance to
the body, spirit and or soul. Drugs play no part in this
restoration. Drugs do not restore balance in the body as they
create a mandated reaction. They force the body to respond
whether it is ready or not. This causes imbalance in other
areas of the body, which we commonly call 'side effects'. Side
effects are inevitable when you take a drug and sometimes the
side effects are worse than the original illness. We've all
seen and heard the drug commercials!
The good news is,
if you have taken an antibiotic then can take probiotics in
the form of a supplement to restore the bacterial environment.
Standard Process has one called Lact Enz. I almost always find
when examining my patients after taking an antibiotic that
they need this supplement. There are also supplements from
Standard Process and Mediherb that I use for those patients
who know the dangers of taking an antibiotic and insist on a
'natural only' approach. These are my graduate A+ patients.
Upon examining them using a technique called Contact Reflex
Analysis, I may find that they need any of the following:
Echinacea, Immuplex, Andrographis, Garlic, Congaplex, or
Thymex to name a few. Each of these supplements support the
body differently. No one leaves my office with the exact same
protocol! In addition, using another technique called Total
Body Modification, patients can literally be restored to
health before leaving the office! Both exams allow me to
detect exactly what it is that a patient needs in terms of
whole body support with no guesswork. We will also discover
the cause(s) of the illness. My hope is that the next time you
are not feeling well, that you come in to Pure NEWtrition,
first!!! You will get the individualized care that you need to
get well. Don't we all just want to be well, without any
additional stress or side-effects?
